Originally in the center of the square was the equestrian statue of Louis XVI, which was destroyed during the French Revolution and replaced in 1810 by a 44-meter-high bronze column inspired by the Trajan column in Rome.
It was made by Napoleon Bonaparte, using the bronze from 1,200 Austrian and Russian cannons, to celebrate victory at the Battle of Austerlitz. It was later destroyed in 1871 by the Communards and erected again under the Third Republic.
